BLUE ROCKS SWEEP AWAY WINSTON-SALEM WITH 6-3 TRIUMPH
Dynamic Duo Of Teaford And Holland Do The Trick As Win Streak Reaches Four
Wilmington, DE - Thanks to another efficient outing from the piggybacking mound duo of Everett Teaford (pictured) and Greg Holland, the Wilmington Blue Rocks completed the three-game sweep of the Winston-Salem Warthogs with a 6-3 victory at Frawley Stadium on Sunday. The triumph gives the Blue Rocks (10-12) a season-best four-game winning streak overall and a five-game streak of success at home. Teaford, a Georgia Southern University product, produced his finest outing of the season in just his second start for Wilmington. The lefty baffled the 'Hogs for six innings, allowing just one hit and one run while fanning three. He was perfect through three and faced just three over the minimum on the afternoon. A Paulo Orlando triple to lead off the third was Teaford's lone blemish. A Javier Colina groundout plated the lone run against the southpaw. The right-handed portion of Wilmington's piggyback equation, Holland, was nearly as good despite a rocky start. He entered in the seventh and allowed a pair of runs on two hits to cut Wilmington's lead in half at 6-3. But, he fanned Orlando with runners at the corners to escape danger and end the frame. Holland breezed through the following two innings, recording strikeouts for three of the final six outs. The Western Carolina University product struck out a total of six in three innings, earning his second save of the season. Wilmington improves to 4-1 this season when either Teaford or Holland starts. Meanwhile, the Blue Rocks bats continued their recent Renaissance with a trio of two-run frames from the second to the fourth. Josh Johnson's two-out triple off starter Jacob Rasner (2-1) in the second gave the Rocks the game's first run. Jarrod Dyson plated Johnson with an opposite-way single to right field immediately thereafter, making it 2-0 Rocks. In the third, a fielding error by Winston-Salem shortstop C.J. Lang opened the door to a pair of unearned Wilmington runs. Derrick Robinson, who reached on Lang’s faux pas and then stole second, scored on a Chris McConnell double to right field to give the Rocks their third run. Two batters later with one out and runners at the corners, David Wood hit a tailor-made double play grounder to second, but Javier Colina strangely opted to throw to first, allowing McConnell to cross home and make it 4-0 Wilmington. After the 'Hogs plated a run off Teaford in the top of the fourth, the Blue Rocks got the run back plus one, as Joe Dickerson chased home a pair with a sharp one-out single to right. The sweep is the first by the Rocks this season and the first three-game trick against Winston-Salem since August 6-8 of last season, also at Frawley. The Blue Rocks welcome the defending Carolina League champion Frederick Keys to Frawley for the first time this season on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. In the first of a three game set, the Rocks will send right-hander Matt Kniginyzky (0-1, 2.20) against Keys righty Pedro Beato (3-1, 3.38). GAME NOTES Third baseman Josh Johnson went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and two walks, extending his team-best on-base streak to 15 games. Johnson, a former 2004 third-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals, has reached base via hit and/or walk in every game in which he’s played this season. His 16 bases on balls are tops on the team. Wilmington base runners continue to swipe bags at an alarming rate, as the Blue Rocks piled up four more steals in Sunday’s victory. Jarrod Dyson stole a pair of sacks, while Derrick Robinson and Joe Dickerson each added a theft. Through 22 games, the Rocks have pilfered a league-best 56 bases and are on pace for a mind-boggling total of 356 steals this season. David Wood started at first base for the Blue Rocks and recorded an oddity – five putouts via foul pop-ups.
