Hey Kids! Here's
your chance to ask Rocky questions about baseball, the Blue Rocks, or
anything else!
Question: Where did the Blue Rocks get their name?
Scotty J, Chester.
Answer: Good question Scotty! The Blue Rocks were the
name of the original professional baseball team in Wilmington, which
played in Wilmington Park from 1940 through 1952. The name came from
73 year old Robert Miller in a contest to name the team. Mr. Miller
thought it would be a good idea to name the club after the blue granite
that can be found along the Brandywine River. The name stuck, and when
baseball returned to Wilmington in 1993, we brought back the old name.
Although, I prefer to believe it was also named after a friendly blue
moose whom lives in the stadium! -Rocky
Question: How many runs have the Blue Rocks scored in one game?
Laura M, Wilmington
Answer: The Blue Rocks scored 20 runs April 18th, 1999,
against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Rocks won that contest, 20-3.
I remember this one well, as my throat was very sore after cheering
all those runs! -Rocky
Question: How many ways can a batter get to first base without making contact
with the ball?
Jim T, New Castle
Answer: Four. The batter can (1)walk, (2) get hit by
a pitch, (3) run to first base on a dropped third strike, or lastly,
(4) be awarded first base on catchers interference(when the catcher
keeps the batter from getting a full swing). Big blue moose, however,
go to first whenever they feel like it! -Rocky
